Suspicion falls on half-jumbie Corinee when local children from her Caribbean island home begin to disappear, and she is forced to go deep into the ocean to seek the help of a dangerous jumbie who rules the waves. - (Baker & Taylor)

Targeted with suspicion when children begin going missing from her Caribbean island home, Corinne LaMer travels deep into the ocean to seek the help of dangerous jumbie Mama D'Leau, who commands her to travel with her friends and mermaids to fetch a powerful object. - (Baker & Taylor)

Deep beneath the waves, a great enemy awakens . . .

Corinne LaMer defeated the wicked jumbie Severine months ago, but things haven’t exactly gone back to normal in her Caribbean island home. Everyone knows Corinne is half-jumbie, and many of her neighbors treat her with mistrust. When local children begin to go missing, snatched from the beach and vanishing into wells, suspicious eyes turn to Corinne.

To rescue the missing children and clear her own name, Corinne goes deep into the ocean to find Mama D’Leau, the dangerous jumbie who rules the sea. But Mama D’Leau’s help comes with a price. Corinne and her friends Dru, Bouki, and Malik must travel with mermaids across the ocean to fetch a powerful object for Mama D’Leau. The only thing more perilous than Corinne’s adventures across the sea is the jumbie that waits for her back home.

With action-packed storytelling and inventive twists on Caribbean and West African mythology and fairy tales, Rise of the Jumbies is a breathlessly exciting tale of courage and friendship.

Booklist Reviews

Somewhere in the Caribbean, on an island Corrine La Mer calls home, children have gone mysteriously missing. Since Corrine is half-jumbie, many of the townspeople suspect she's had something to do with it, or else she's in league with those who did. So she begins a journey to prove that despite her heritage, she loves her island and her people, and maybe she doesn't have to choose whether she's a girl or a jumbie. Corrine journeys across oceans with friends and mermaids to retrieve a precious stone for the jumbie who rules the sea, faces an old foe upon her return, and works toward restoring her little island to its former beauty. Young readers are probably familiar with Greek myths, thanks to Rick Riordan, and other enduring European classics, so this series with twists on Caribbean (particularly Haitian and Trinidadian) and West African tales is a welcome change. Despite that new flavor, however, Baptiste explores an all-too-familiar theme—after all, who can't relate to feeling like they're being pulled in two directions, when they just want to be themselves?
