It's summer in East Joy, a corner of New England where time seems to have stood still and the spirits of the past wander among abandoned cars. East Joy rises on a crust of earth along the Connecticut River; over the river stands a freight bridge named after the Wampanoag chief who led a rebellion to reclaim his territory from the Puritans; and on the bridge stands nineteen-year-old Hai, dangling a leg over the railing after deciding to leap from a height of thirty meters. And then, suddenly, something interrupts what seemed inevitable: a voice on the other side of the river. It's Grazina, an elderly woman trapped in the labyrinths of memory, with recollections of a distant war and her native Lithuania. In a microcosm of loss and shattered dreams, amidst the dusty streets and melancholic landscapes of East Joy, they will build an ephemeral refuge from the chaos of the world. In Grazina's labyrinthine and hazy past, Hai will become Sergeant Pepper, a character in an imaginary war that will allow them to navigate the turbulence of alienation together. United by an existence lived on the margins of society, a bond based on empathy and recognition will be forged between this unlikely duo; a relationship woven from confusion and moments of lucidity that will become an unexpected journey toward a second chance.
